Today's '50 Days' featured drawing is 'Poise'. This drawing is of a chestnut mare who was competing at last years Fife Show. I chose graphite for this drawing as i like the way it looks energetic and kind of messy, which I think helps show the tension in the horse.

Today's featured drawing is called 'Donkey!'. 'Donkey' was inspired by a field full of donkeys near my cottage that I pass by every other day. The gorgeous donkeys attract so much attention from passers by, they really are local celebrities. My husband took to the one above and spent the whole time scratching the donkeys head while I was gathering my reference photos!

Hello and welcome back!

I've not been around recently long enough to update my blog. However, I promise I have not been slacking! I'm working on some very interesting commissions at the moment and also working through the courses on offer at the Business Gateway and the Cultural Enterprise.

The courses are brilliant and very motivational. I'm even, slowly, getting to grips with networking! There were times when I never thought I would be able to say that. I am naturally quite shy (although some people may not believe that statement :) ) and I do find it hard talking about myself. But, I have enough conviction in my artwork to talk about that, so I am getting there.

I am currently working on my marketing plan and a few ideas have been suggested. Such as including testimonials in my advertising and website. This drawing was inspired by the Riders of the Storm during their demonstration at Glamis.

These two horses were walking together while a stunt-girl was thrilling the audience with acrobatics on theirs backs. The horses looked so relaxed the whole time, despite people clambering over them and the crowd cheering. I love the closeness of the two horses... makes me want to find some wild horses in a herd to draw! Who knows!

Todays creation is once again inspired from my visit to Blair Horse Trials. The horse in the drawing was one of three lovely horses that were being used to show off Le Trec to the visitors. He stood still whilst his rider draped a Scotland flag over, around and under his head. He didn't flinch a bit. He was a perfect demonstration horse for Le Trec.

Sometimes, quite often actually, in art you have to know when to give up on a drawing that just isn't working out. And other times you need to know when you can keep pushing it to get something you are happy with. I am really glad that I persevered with this drawing - I very nearly gave up. I wanted to emphasise the important features - the eye and the nostrils and i've been wanting to try a dark back ground with the horse appearing out of the darkness.

I'm pleased with where this drawing has gone to - hope you like it.

Today I had my heart set on drawing a dressage themed picture, but sometimes you have to accept defeat. Something just wasn't working for me and I wasn't happy with the way the drawing was going. So, while looking for inspiration for my next attempt - this wee fella caught my attention. He had escaped from his field and was trotting about the yard being very inquisitive.

Life is too short for being serious all the time!

Oh, and this marks 5 weeks of the project Two weeks and two days to go!

Part two of the Showtime images.

This drawing is of one of the British show-jumpers competing at Blair this year. The rider was walking him around the arena during the prize-giving. He was rather fidgety and wouldn't stand still like the other horses.

The muscle definition and the shine on their coats is gorgeous. I like the way charcoal can show off light on the form - or rather, the removal of charcoal shows the highlights.

Another drawing inspired from my visits to this summers horse trials.

I cannot wait for the summer to come around again so I can gather more reference material - it's addictive.

Anyway, this boy was enjoying a moment of peace and quiet before he entered the ring. He was so still and calm - nothing like show days when I was younger! But his ears and eyes showed that he was ready for what was coming. A lovely moment to capture.

The title may give this one away, but this is a drawing of my pony 'Kally'. She has huge, soft eyes, long elegant ears and a fine head. Well, in the summer anyway, in the winter she turns into a hairy monster!

I like the simplicity of this drawing, with the focus being on the important features - her eyes, ears, muzzle and dished nose.

The Highland in this drawing is another from my Glamis Countryside Fair collection! I'm surprised I spent any time at my stall considering all the reference images I took on the weekend.

The Highland was on display as part of an education stand which aimed to inform the public about how wonderful Highlands Ponies are, especially in Scotland. There was information on the breed and the history of Highlands. I do have a soft spot for Highlands (and Friesians and Welshies and ... well I haven't met a breed I don't like!). This particular pony had a beautiful dappled coat and this is my first attempt at drawing a dappled. I didn't want to over do it but I did want to give a suggestion of the dapples.

I am quite pleased with this drawing of a hawk from Glamis Countryside Fair. I like the messy lines around the hawk which, to me, suggests movement and energy. The feathers were amazingly detailed but i didn't want to get too involved in the detail for this drawing. The scale of the drawing is quite large, which i hope helps with the drama of the piece - not excluding the scarey eye!

I love the way this horses mane pours down his neck when he lowers his head. I've been wanting to draw this for sometime and then I found my photographs this morning. Perfect.

Charcoal is fantastic for drawing manes as it allows you to draw different thicknesses, shading is easy and removing bits for highlights is easy too. Definitely one of my favourite mediums to work with. I especially enjoy the way you can show movement with charcoal when you use it on it's side.

This drawing is a little late in going up. It should have been up yesterday. However, I was at the funeral of a friend yesterday and the drawing wasn't quite finished in time. I decided that I wanted to donate the money from this drawing, in memory of my friend, to Maggie's Centre.

The mare in this drawing is beautiful - she reminded me of every little girls dream horse with her long flowing mane and gorgeous eyes. A real lady. The blustery day added to her dream-like status as the wind whipped her mane and forelock around her head. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a little horn at her forehead!

The inspiration behind this drawing was the ridden Clydesdale class at Blair Horse Trials this year. The power and energy emanate from these horses as they canter around the ring at the end of the class. Standing just on the other side of the ring as 10 massive horses charge past inches from you is quite exhilarating!

You can feel the beat from their hooves in your heart. Amazing!

I thought it might be quite nice to show an example of my sketches when I'm working from life. As you can see, these images are drawn very quickly. I usually have about 5 drawings on the go at the same time and return to each as the horses move back into a similar pose.

I love the results from these days and think i might try some big scale versions in charcoal or oil pastel. However, the inquisitive nature of the horses may cause some problems...

Todays drawing is of a Friesian who was part of the Independent Horse - Extreme Horse riding display team at Glamis Countryside Fair this year.

The Friesian was such an eye catching horse that - no surprises - I have about a hundred photos of him. I wanted to show the effort this guy was putting into the stunts. His nostrils were huge and eyes so attentive. Friesians have always been a favourite of mine since I was a wee girl so I was in heaven when the riders rode into the arena.

Yet another drawing inspired by my visit to Fife Animal Park! I should be on commission from them :)

I was really taken with their Zebra. I think I watched him for about half an hour, just watching everything he did. And a strange thing that sticks in my head - horses and ponies have chestnuts on the insides of their legs. This zebra had chestnuts that were very flat but huge!

Anyway, hope you like the drawing. I liked the contrast of the stripes and unusual composition. See what you think.

I love the look of bliss in her face as she's scratching her cheek on the corner of the wooden post. It must be some effort getting through all that hair!

This drawing is of a friesian stunt horse. He was part of the stunt display team who exhibited at Glamis Countryside fair in September this year. They were brilliant to watch and the horses were gorgeous! The Friesian features in most of my photographs from the day, so expect a few more drawings!

Day Nine and may I introduce you to Donkey! I recently visited a neighbour who keeps donkeys in a field by the road. I pass almost every day and very often there'll be people leaning over the fence stroking the gorgeous donkeys. This one took a liking to my husband who I had dragged along with me to distract the donkeys whilst I took their photos. It's impossible to not fall in love with them instantly. Especially those ears!

Something a little humorous.

Today's drawing is of a lovely cob. I love the cheeky expression on her face and the way her eyes poke through her unruly forelock. When I was trying to take reference sketches and photographs she would follow me around the field standing directly in front of me wherever I went, very inquisitive.

I like the dramatic composition too... I don't think anything else would have worked for her...

The inspiration behind the whole project was this drawing of a thoroughbred I photographed at Blair Horse Trials this summer. He was such a stunning horse I couldn't keep my eyes off him, or my camera. Though I'm not sure the rider was too pleased as he was playing up something awful. I think he may crop up a few times during this exercise...

'Clyde' is the first drawing in the series. Again the inspiration for this drawing was from Blair Horse Trials. This time the Ridden Clydesdale's Class. The power in these horses is just immense and I was blown away by their willingness to do everything their riders asked.

I love the look in his eye - a real gentleman.

50 Days of Christmas - it's here!!

It's been a long time in the planning but I'm finally at the stage to launch my new project:

Winter Drawings.

50 Days of Christmas

50 drawings in 50 days for under £50

After looking through the research I have gathered over the last few months I am feeling very inspired and it feels great to be back in the studio. So I have decided to undertake a wee project which will take me right up to Christmas day.

Starting on Friday the 4th of November I will undertake a new drawing (and maybe a few paintings too) each day which will be posted on my blog, until Christmas eve.

I have been dying to try a highland cow or two and maybe some of my chickens, so I don't want to limit myself to just equestrian subjects but they will definitely dominate the project.

Drawing has always been of massive importance to my work. Without good draftsmanship a drawing or painting just doesn't stand up. Therefore, spending 50 days drawing is going to be a wonderful exercise for my work - I can't wait to see the results and hopefully some improvements!

Each art work will be for sale and will be available to purchase securely online via this blog.

The Small Print:

Each art work is individual. The sizes and media will vary but I will note this in the description of each image that I post.

Please note that colours may vary slightly between the image on your screen and the original art work. This is due to monitors, scanners and cameras all being slightly different.

All works are sold unmounted and unframed.

Money Back

If the artwork is returned in it's original condition within 30 days of the buyer receiving it, Lindsay Mathers will return money paid minus fees (PayPal /Credit card) and shipping.

I've been working on commissions today - graphite portraits. These are very rewarding to do but they take a lot of concentration and tiny movements. Then i just happened to see a photo I had taken at Blair Horse Trials this summer and I couldn't resist having a wee go.

The class was the ex-racers and this horse was causing his owner some amount of stress. There was so much energy and life in this stunning gray. I think I must have taken over a hundred photos of him alone.

I've decided to do a project around this beautiful horse - very loose energetic works... and maybe a tight graphite in there too. I think this horse will lend himself to anything.

Wish I knew his name...

Dairsie Does Different @ Christmas

I can't believe it has been 7 months since our first Dairsie Does Different event. What a seven months it's been too. But there's no rest for the wicked and we're heading straight for Dairsie Does Different part 2! This one just in time for Christmas. 3rd of December. 10am - 4pm.

There will be some of the original stall holders and many new and exciting crafts people too! So far we have the wonderful world of Whimsical Lush confirmed for round two,

the weird and wonderful creatures of Blair McCafferty, Aidrian Murry's outstanding creations and contemporary jewellery, delicious baking from the fantastic Bakehouse and there's many, many more.

Oh and just in! Photography from one of Scotland's most original photographers (more info and images asap!)

I'll make a whole post dedicated just to DDD very soon but I'm awaiting some info and images from the stall holders.

I've had an incredibly busy few weeks with commissions and fairs galore.

The above are my latest two commissions which I am very pleased with, even if i do say so myself :)

This weekend was spent at Scotland's Countryside Festival in the beautiful grounds of Glamis Castle.

I had a fantastic time and have to say the whole festival was brilliantly organised. Thank you so much to everyone who visited my stall.

My Christmas commissions are filling up fast and I'm really looking forward to the diversity of them all - especially the highland cow and the chickens!!

Horsey Car Boot Sale - Errol

I'm gutted to say that I had to pack up early today. The weather was blowing all my work away and I just couldn't take the chance of it being damaged.

I did however hand out all my flyers to everyone I saw!
Thanks to everyone who came along and I'm sorry if you expected to see me and I had already left.

Next up is Scotland's Countryside Festival at Glamis Castle next weekend (3rd and 4th September - oh my goodness it's nearly September!). I'll definitely be there all weekend as I'm in the 3D2D craft marquee and this is very unlikely to blow away!!

I will have prints, cards and originals for sale as well as gift vouchers and I will also be taking bookings for Christmas commissions.

Blair Horse Trials, Open Studios and new prints!

So, I put up a wee post on my facebook page to ask people what paintings I should have turned into prints. As it turns out - I have no idea what people like!! :) I thought Monument (see previous post) was my best to date but as it turns out Jazz Blue is still the favourite,

I'm off to the printers tomorrow so will ensure I have a whole summer full of prints in different sizes - something for everyone!

A new jewellery boutique/ gallery called Neo Design has opened up on Whitehall Crescent in Dundee.
Upstairs there is an exciting collection of the finest European Contemporary Jewellery whilst downstairs has been converted into a fine art gallery and the owners workshop.

The official opening for the gallery is February the 17th. Less than one week to go!

So, here's what's coming this year so far:

February 17th - Exhibition in Dundee at the newest gallery in town - Neo, Whitehall Crescent.

April (dates to be confirmed) - Dairsie Contemporary Craft Fair

April 4th til May 2nd - Solo Exhibition at The Pillars Of Hercules, Falkland. All new works!!

May 6th, 7th and 8th - Open Studios Fife. Visit me at work in my lovely studio. Delectable local baking will accompany - more details to follow!

May 21st - The Fife Show - hoping it'll be as beautiful as last years! I'll be in the Equestrian section again!

and that's just for starters! Application for The Royal Highland Show is in progress and fingers, legs and toes are crossed for an appearance at Blair Horse Trials. I'll keep you up to date about these as I hear back.

So, I really should get back in the studio - that's a lot of painting to be done...

What a year it's been!

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me and my work. The encouragement from everyone has been invaluable.

I've already started planning for next year, with commissions already placed, my first solo exhibition confirmed (dates to follow), open studio event in May, and I am taking part in more shows such as the Fife Show (waiting to hear back from others but will keep this site updated as I hear from them).

The stuff little girls dreams are made of! Busby had the most fantastic mane and the strong wind on the day of photographing him made him look absolutely magical.

I've already started making my New Year resolutions. Most of which are centered around my art.

1 - I was advised to try '100 paintings in 100 days'. This is pretty self-explanatory but I've decided not to limit myself and will be including drawings too. The sizes, mediums, subject matter can be anything, depending on what attracts me on the day. I'll regularly post them up here (see my next resolution!)

2 - Regularly update the blog with recent works and upcoming events. I've been a little slack with updating the blog this year, but as part of my further commitment to my work I'm going to keep on top of it next year.

There are more, but these'll do for now!

Once again, I'd like to thank everyone for their support. This year really has been life changing for me.

He's such a mischievous wee pony with a fantastic mane. It was a horrendously stormy day when I took the reference photos but I think the wind in his mane works well for this commission.

Josh and April, charcoal study. It was great fun to work on two completely different horses in the same drawing, April is so inquisitive and Josh is a very handsome poser, thankfully!!

June and July...

It's been a while!

I've been clearing out the studio in an attempt to get it ready for making lots of new works. I'm working on the reference material just now with hundreds of new photos and sketch books filling up like crazy. It's a very exciting time.

On the commission front I've just completed two new works. A charcoal study of a stunning horse called Strider.

And a graphite portrait of Doodles, a most beautiful little horse.

In June there was a graphite study of Basil, a chestnut gelding who knows how lovely he is! Graphite studies are quite different from Graphite portraits as they are very 'free' in their approach. Portraits are meticulous, every hair in the correct place, studies are more freehand and expressive.

And this is a charcoal study of Cloud and Mia. I really like the contrast of the two together. It's quite a challenge to have subjects which are so different in scale, but I think this works well.

The only down side is that when I take photographs of my work a LOT of the detail is lost. I must find out how to take better detailed photos...

Things Are Getting Very Exciting!!

I honestly believe that you get out what you put in, and just now I am working like crazy on my art and so much is happening...

Firstly, I will be appearing at The Fife Show this year on Saturday the 22nd of May.
I will have my stall-cum-gallery in the Equestrian section.
I am really looking forward to this but there is so much to do before the day. I must order prints of some of my most popular paintings, make mounts for the drawings and paintings that I have completed recently, try to sort out a deal with a local framer to make it easier for customers to have the paintings they purchase framed professionally....

I am also working on three completely different commissions:

In no particular order....
Firstly a graphite study of a very handsome chestnut called Basil - this is very exciting as it's quite an adventurous piece of work - I hope the client loves it as much as I do!!

Next, I am working on a charcoal drawing of a beautiful horse and gorgeous dog in the same image. They are both so picturesque so it's great fun. Even down to posing for the photos!!

And thirdly, a very detailed Graphite portrait of a much loved and sadly missed Kitty called Shelly. In the preferred photo she has her tongue sticking out - very cute!

These will all be completed by next weekend, if not before. It is really useful to work on more than one commission at once as it keeps each drawing/painting fresh and lively.

As my website is still not quite ready, I wanted to post some information about the processes and prices for commissions.

Charcoal study : this is a drawing in charcoal. It is maybe best described as a detailed, expressive sketch/study. I can work initially 'live' from your horse/pet and then return to my studio to work from my sketches and photographs (either yours or mine) to produce a final image. Or I can work solely from your own photographs in my studio. I like to have a few photographs from which to work, however, if you have a particular photograph you favour please let me know.

This is a charcoal study of a Skewbald called Jazz.

Prices for graphite and charcoal studies start at £55 for an A5 drawing.

Graphite Portrait: this is a very detailed drawing of your horse/pet created on Stonehenge paper and using leads.

For these portraits I can work from your photographs. The better and clearer your photograph the better the final drawing will be! Therefore it is important to send me the best photographs that you can. In situations where it is not possible to have multiple photographs, or perhaps your horse/pet has passed on please contact me in the first instance to discuss how to proceed. However, It's very rare that I am unable to work from just the one photograph.
I am also willing to take my own reference photographs to work from - again, get in touch to discuss this option.

The above portrait is a Graphite portrait. The size is approx 22 x 15".

Prices for Graphite Portraits are from:

A4 (approx 8.5 x 12") - £120,
A3 (Approx 12 x 16.5") - £175,
A2 (approx 16.5 x 24") - £285,

Study in paint: to create a study in paint I can work from your photographs. I also like, where possible, to do my own sketches/ photographs of your horse. The process involved is thus: I study the photographs provided and make many sketches and experiment with different painting methods until I find one particular image and method which I feel really shows the essence of your horse.
I will use charcoal, acrylic paint, oil paint etc to find the perfect medium for your image.

'Bay Stallion' was created using charcoal and oil paint.

'Energy' was created on two individual board panels and I used charcoal, acrylic and oil paint!

For my Studies with Paint I can work on special paper, prepared board or stretched canvas. Prices do vary according to which 'ground' you prefer but the prices below give you an idea for works completed on special paper.

This commission was a surprise 60th birthday present and so I have had to wait until today to put the images up.
It was fantastic to do. I have included some detail shots and progress shots too to explain how the commission evolves....

Generally I try to work left to right to avoid smudging the images. Each image is brought up to the same level and then I start on the details - whiskers, light reflections, stray hairs - the tiny bits that bring the drawing to life!

This is the drawing up stage. 6 individual graphs are drawn up (one for each portrait) as each one is a slightly different size, this takes a wee bit of time.
I actually love the look of the drawing at this stage... maybe my technical side coming through.

Am so close to completing my latest commission - one more day to go I think...
However, as it's a present I am not allowed to put it up until after the 14th.
It's a huge graphite drawing of 6 horses. It's been absolutely fantastic to do as each horse is so completely different. From the texture in their forelocks to the length of their eyelashes! Very challenging and satisfying.

Ah well, I'll just have to wait until next week then. I've also been recording the process for the client so it will be very useful to put on here to show how a commission is completed.

I have a few commissions in the pipe line at the moment: Two teenagers in a portrait for a 60th birthday present, a friend has commissioned a beloved dog portrait as a present to her Mother and two separate portraits of ponies for the same client. Can't wait to get started on these later this month.
